The Protech Knives Runt 5 is the newest evolution of the California legal Runt series of automatic knives from Protech. A stout, high performance Gentleman’s auto, the Runt carries well and performs like a razor while still being robust enough to handle a variety of cutting tasks. This production prototype has a Mike Irie hand hollow grind, black DLC coated, CPM-20CV reverse Tanto blade, matching black hardware, stonewashed aluminum bronze handle and satin finished, Mother-of-Pearl inlaid button. Blade: The Runt 5 comes with a California legal, sub-2″ blade made of premium CPM-20CV stainless steel delivering excellent performance for everyday use. This reverse Tanto prototype comes with a Mike Irie hand ground hollow grind for a thin, refined edge that slices with ease while the forward swedge tapers the tip for piercing and detail work. The clean slicing plain edge blade is equipped with a matte black DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coating that resists wear and corrosion and is discreetly non-reflective. The blade deploys via a button operated coil spring automatic mechanism for fast, smooth one-handed operation. Mother-of-Pearl inlaid into the button adds a touch of class to this one of a kind piece.

Handle: The robust handle is made of aluminum bronze, a premium alloy that delivers solid heft in the hand and will develop a unique natural patina with time and handling, though slower than standard bronze. Stonewashed for a rugged, wear hiding look, the small handle keeps the knife compact for carry while providing plenty of grip for secure use thanks to the nearly half inch thickness. A subtle choil, tapered end and dimpled jimping deliver a secure and comfortable grip. Black coated hardware and inline lanyard hole complete the construction. Marked prototype on the handle edge.

CPM-20CV: CPM-20CV (analog to Bohler M390 and CTS-204P) is a premium powder metallurgy (PM) stainless steel with high carbide content for some of the highest edge retention and corrosion resistance while being relatively easy to sharpen. A popular choice for high-end production and custom knives. Relatively high carbide volume and coarse microstructure gives this steel lower toughness.
